The Call for Applications for our next Summer School, from September 8th-12th, 2025, is open now: BIPMainz_CallForApplications_students
Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), 2024-2025
The FORTHEM-lab “Diversity and Migration” in Mainz is organizing a multidisciplinary Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Summer School on the topic of Invisibilities and Visualities of Migration. We take the current paradigmatic shift of decentering migration studies as a starting point to critically engage with existing methods and approaches, and to question how we conceptualize “the migrant”,“mobility”, “vulnerability” and other common terminologies in the context of European migration- andborderscapes.
Some featured subtopics for the summer school will be:
Topic 1: Ethics and techniques of visuality
Topic 2: Current theories for migration to Europe
Topic 3: Political subjectivation, empowerment of migrants
Topic 4: Multivocalities and audiovisual methods
Topic 5: Opportunities and risks of invisibilities and visualities
Topic 6: Media activism: counternarratives and strategies
Topic 7: The depiction of “otherness”: Historical colonialities in audiovisual media
The summer school will have a strong collaborative character to experience different voices, perspectives, methods, and ideas for activists, civil-society actors and creative research. Artistic or creative outputs and portfolios are explicitly welcome.
The call for application for students is open now until February 28th, 2025.

IncluKIT - Inclusive Intercultural Communication Training Kit for Initial Reception of Migrants
The FORTHEM Lab "Diversity and Migration" launched its milestone: IncluKIT is available now!
Free Download of all kits and further information here
Further translations (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish... are available soon)
IncluKIT is a training kit aimed at the whole spectrum of volunteers and professionals involved in the initial reception of newly arrived migrants in European countries, focusing on the analysis of mismatched expectations and misunderstandings during this transitional phase.

The kit is designed for all the people working with migrants, based on an in-depth study of their respective needs. It makes use of recent academic research on interculturality to go beyond the limits of traditional tools for raising awareness of cultural differences. IncluKIT provides a practical application of critical theoretical approaches, based on varied and innovative methodologies, in a user-friendly format. The training kit is accessible free of charge and can be used in various contexts (state-sponsored institutions, NGOs, educational/academic communities, private businesses) and adapted to specific local realities.
IncluKIT is the FIT FORTHEM co-creation pilot project of the FORTHEM Lab Diversity & Migration. FORTHEM is an alliance of nine European universities, six of which are involved in IncluKIT: Università degli Studi di Palermo (Italy), Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Germany), Université de Bourgogne (France), Jyväskylän Yliopisto (Finland), Uniwersytet Opolski (Poland) and Universitat de València (Spain). The two external stakeholders for the project are SIETAR Europa and diversophy®, with the support of SIETAR Switzerland and the SIG Migration.
