A current empirical research project focuses specifically on questions of (national) identity and belonging among young urban Omanis. This generation, born after 1970, has grown up entirely within the modernization paradigm. At the same time, the social structure in Oman has changed and heterogenized rapidly during this time. Especially in the urban context, young people meet regardless of family affiliation and geographical origin. On the one hand, young urban Omanis cultivate lifestyles that differ in many respects from the values and consumption patterns of their parents’ generation. On the other hand, they orient themselves towards family-centered social structures in the context of weddings, for example in the choice of partner and wedding ceremony.
